RottweilerAs of October 2009, the authorities on Camp Pendleton have stated that Marines and Sailors in base housing on Camp Pendleton who own Pit Bulls, Pit Bull mixes, Rottweilers, Rottie mixes, and wolf hybrids must take their dog through an AKC Canine Good Citizen test and the dog must pass to remain in base housing.

To help Marines and Sailors and their families keep their dogs, we are offering a program of training for the dogs to achieve that result. Marines and Sailors need to bring their dogs to one of our free evaluation dates listed below. At that time, Kindred Spirits training will evaluate the dog and owner's level of training and control.

Call or email Kindred Spirits for upcoming dates.

* If the dog is able to pass the CGC immediately, we will either do the test at that time or schedule a test in the near future.

* If the dog just needs some brush up training before taking the test, we will advise the owner of what is needed.

* If the dog's training skills are not up to the level needed for the test, we will help the owner schedule a basic obedience class.

* If we see some temperament or behavioral problems that would cause the dog to fail the CGC, we will discuss those problems with the owner at the time of the evaluation.

If you have questions about this process call 760-630-4824 or email lizpalika@gmail.com.

Additional dates and times will be added as needed.

If you want more information on the American Kennel Club CGC program to see if your dog needs more training or not, go to the AKC’s website.

To The Ladies of Kindred Spirits:

When my family and I moved into base housing and were told one of our family members might not be allowed to live there to say we were crushed is an understatement. Our dog Sam was a rescue, half lab and the other half is where the problem laid, half pit.

My three children began to panic thinking Sam would have to go. This was not an option I would accept. So we all were attending the training at Kindred Spirits. We were nervous but the ladies here were upfront and honest about the challenges ahead of us. We worked with Sam everyday and saw the difference each and every time we trained.

Sam passed his test with flying colors and the amount of relief and happiness we all felt was a blessing! It is unfortunate that military families are being forced to do this just because of a certain breed of dog, but it’s worth saving a family member. Thanks again Ladies we are all truly thankful!

Sincerely,
Bryan, Lindsay, Madison, Gage, Emma and SAM!!!
